Is An Under Cabinet Spice Rack
A Good Idea?

So you're in the market for an under cabinet spice rack? Well, you're making a good choice, if you need the extra space, and the extra space may not be available in your cabinets. This is one solution to your spice storage problems. The spice rack is not on the countertop, or in a cabinet, but attached to the underside of a cabinet. What a great solution! But there are some things to take into consideration before buying.

First of all, most of these racks can only hold up to 12 spice bottles. The good thing is you can have as many of these spice racks as you have space for. Not to mention the installation of these is very simple with, normally, only 4 screws that attach them to the undersides of the cabinet.

These may be difficult to find though. They are not in the mainstream and there is not a huge selection of retailers. The best way to find one of these is to search on the Internet. Or if you feel inclined to make one of these racks yourself, go ahead and try it! There are ton of free templates and ideas for this type of spice rack.

An under cabinet rack folds up to a slim profile with only the thickness of the spice bottle exposed. These racks fold down on a hinge with a chain or bar system to hold the rack open at just the right distance. I personally prefer the bar system because it folds easily without the worry of having to arrange the chain so it doesn't get caught when closing the rack.

These racks are also very affordable; they usually cost less than $30. Most under cabinet spice racks are made from plastic but wood is also an option. The wood type of spice rack is higher in price. The price starts at $25 for the wood racks and goes up from there.

Another benefit to these racks is the fact that when closed light cannot get into the bottles. Light getting to the spices shortens their shelf life. Not to mention their taste. After all, we spend a lot of money on spices and we all want to increase their shelf life.

Other uses for an under cabinet spice rack could be a first aid station, a place to store pens and paper, medicines, and much more. Let your imagination run wild.

In closing, if you're interested in saving space, increasing the shelf life of your spices, or looking for an inexpensive way to organize your kitchen, a way to keep spices handy and near your cooking area this is a great solution.
